- Presbyterian Healthcare Services
Presbyterian was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1908 as the Southwestern
Presbyterian Sanatorium, a five-room cottage that served tuberculosis patients from across
the United States. The Reverend Hugh Cooper left his ministry with the Presbyterian Church
to develop and operate "The San" because so many of his parishioners were
afflicted with the disease.
That original five-room cottage has grown to a 453-bed hospital today, Presbyterian
Hospital, serving more New Mexicans than any other hospital in the state. And Presbyterian
Hospital is just one part of a statewide system of care. Presbyterian Healthcare Services
operates seven hospitals in Albuquerque, Clovis, Espanola, Ruidoso, Socorro and Tucumcari.
In addition, Presbyterian offers New Mexicans a range of health insurance products through
Presbyterian Health Plan and primary and specialty care through Presbyterian Medical Group
at 29 different locations throughout New Mexico.
Today, Presbyterian remains a locally-based and community-driven not-for-profit
organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors. Our purpose as an organization
is to improve the health of individuals, families and communities.
